FREDERICTON (CNB) - The Department of Health has revoked, effective immediately, the licence of Nashwaak-Keswick Ambulance Service Inc. to operate an ambulance service, Health Minister Mike Murphy announced today.

"As a result, the department's contract with Nashwaak-Keswick Ambulance Service Inc. to provide ambulance services in the area of Burtts Corner, Keswick, Stanley and surrounding communities is terminated," Murphy said. "I wish to assure members of the public in this area that there will be no interruption in ambulance services as a result of this action."

Murphy said the department has contracted Medavie-Blue Cross to operate the area's ambulance service, effective immediately.

Section 15 of the Ambulance Services Act gives the department authority to revoke an operator's licence where it is of the opinion that it is inappropriate for the operator to continue to operate ambulance services.

Murphy said an audit conducted by the Department of Health revealed information that led the department to believe the licence should be revoked. This information has now been turned over to other authorities for investigation and action as required.

"As a result, it would be inappropriate to comment on the specifics of this information," he said.
