Education

The Paramedic Association of New Brunswick is an active participant in the future of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in New Brunswick. Accordingly, the Association is lobbying for and assisting in the development of enhanced educational requirements in the province.

Currently, the "Minimum Standard" for prehospital emergency medical education in New Brunswick is Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). For more detailed information regarding the Standards for Ambulance Services in New Brunswick, visit the Government of New Brunswick website at www.gnb.ca.

The Association has been actively lobbying government to introduce Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) as the minimum standard, in accordance with the National Occupational Competency Profile (NOCP) guidelines (2001). Broadening the scope of practice can and will assist the health care system in this province both in short and long term as further changes are made to the overall health care system in the province.

The Paramedic Association of New Brunswick participates on several committees regarding to education and standards in the province. These committees include:

  • Advisory committees for educational programs;

  • Department of Health and Wellness committees regarding standards, legislation and clinical competence.

  • The Association has also been a partner with the Province in reference to the "Mutual Recognition Agreement" under Chapter 7 of the Agreement on Internal Trade. As well, the Association is a active Chapter of the Paramedic Association of Canada.
