Due to some recent questions and confusion arising out of the definition of the term “Patient Contact” in reference to the requirements under the renewal of registration process, the Association wishes to provide some clarification.

When defining a “Patient Contact”, it is irrelevant where the paramedic obtains the contact so long as all of the following three conditions are met:

1. You are the primary care provider;
2. you are providing care consistent with your license level (PCP is giving care at the PCP level, EMT is giving care at the EMT level);
3. You are undertaking to complete a full assessment on the patient, including a history and physical exam;

Regardless of where you are exposed to these patients, whether it be on ambulance, in an industrial setting, in a hospital setting, or at an immunization clinic, by following these guidelines, you as the paramedic will be able to ensure that you are working towards meeting the requirements as set out by the Board of Directors of the Paramedic Association of New Brunswick.

If you have any questions regarding this or any other aspect of your registration renewal process for 2010 please do not hesitate to contact the Association office.

Sincerely,

Chris Hood
Executive Director/Registrar
